Benjamin Sisko was first officer on the U.S.S. Saratoga when it was destroyed in battle against the Borg at Wolf 359 in 2367. After nearly three years at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards on Mars, Sisko was promoted to commander and assigned to Deep Space Nine after the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor in 2369. The deeply religious Bajorans believe that Sisko is "the Emissary" foretold by prophecy. After a strategy meeting with Starfleet Command in early 2371, Sisko returned to DS9 with the U.S.S. Defiant, a prototype ship he'd helped design to fight the Borg. With the Borg threat temporarily lessened, the Defiant was reassigned to defend the Alpha Quadrant from the Dominion. In late 2372, Starfleet withdrew from DS9 in the face of a combined Cardassian/Jem'Hadar assault. Sisko and the Defiant crew liberated the station four months later.
