CAPTAIN'S PERSONAL LOG
"I am entering the ship's holodeck, where images of reality are created by our computers: highly useful in crew training, highly enjoyable when used for games and recreation. I am delighted with how the holodeck has created the fictional world of Dixon Hill… the twentieth century detective who has been a hero of mine since childhood. The characters are meta-generated by the computer, of course. Yet they feel real, they SEEM real in every way…"

HOLODECK PROGRAM: "The Big Goodbye"

While on the ship's holodeck, Captain Jean-Luc Picard assumes the "alter ego" of his favorite detective, Dixon Hill, the gumshoe featured in the serial "Amazing Detective Stores." Captain Picard is joined by his friends, Data and Dr. Beverly Crusher and the ship's historian, Mr. Whelan. Together, they embark on an exciting adventure straight from the Dixon Hill stories, known as the case of the "Big Goodbye." This was a murder mystery where a woman hired Dixon Hill to protect her. A computer glitch, however, creates havoc for the holodeck program and its participants. The historian, Whelan, is seriously injured when a criminal in the story shoots at him. Eventually Captain Jean-Luc Picard a Dixon Hill outwits the holodeck criminals and brings everyone out of the holodeck safely.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE: Captain Jean-Luc Picard as Dixon Hill is featured here for the first time, attired the way he was in the Peabody Award Winning Episode: "The Big Goodbye."
