Jessee James Born in Clay County, Missouri September 5, 1847 Died April 3, 1882
Jessee James was one of the most famous outlaws of the American West, where he acquired a Robin Hood reputation among the people of his region. When he was just 15 years old he joned a band of pro-Confederate guerrillas led by William C. "Bloody Bill" Quantrill. After the war he formed a gang with his brother, Frank, and several other outlaws. They held up banks, stagecoaches, and trains until 1876. The gang was decimated trying to rob a bank in Northfield, Minnesota. The two James brothers escaped and formed a new gang. On April 3, 1882, Jessee was shot and killed by a fellow gang member for the reward that was on his head. This action forced Frank James to surrender. He was tried and acquitted twice.
