James Butler Hickock "Wild Bill" Born in Troy Grove, Illinois May 27, 1837 Died August 2, 1876
Wild Bill Hickock was a famous Indian fighter and frontier marshal. He was most famous for his quick draw and his deadly shooting. He left his family farm in Illinois when he was 18 years old and he wandered westward. In Nebraska, he had a shootout with the McCandles gang and killed 3 members of the gang.
Hickock served as a Union scout during the Civil War and he later became a Federal Marshal in Kansas. Wild Bill toured in the Buffalo Bill Cody Wild West Show, featuring his crack marksmanship. Wild Bill was shot from behind and killed while playing poker in a saloon in Deadwood in the Dakota Territory.
