Marty Jannetty began his professional wrestling career in 1983, first teaming with his trainer Jerry Oates in Mid-South Wrestling before moving to Southeastern Championship Wrestling. In 1984, Jannetty joined the Central States Wrestling promotion, where he formed the popular tag team The Midnight Rockers with Shawn Michaels, winning the NWA Central States Tag Team Championship. After leaving the CSW for the AWA, the duo eventually caught the attention of the WWF and on 31.05.1988 they debuted as The Rockers.
Upon joining the WWF in 1988, the Rockers engaged in memorable feuds with top tag teams such as the Hart Foundation, Brain Busters, Fabulous Rougeaus, the Orient Express and Twin Towers. On October 30, 1990 Jannetty and Michaels finally seemed to capture the WWF Tag Team Championship from the Hart Foundation. During the match, the top rope broke, but the Rockers were still awarded the titles in front of the live audience that night. However, the WWF later decided not to recognize the title change, even though the Rockers had defended the belts at a house show on November 3rd. The promotion essentially ignored the events of October 30th, leaving and the Rockers are not officially recognized as former WWF tag team champions.
In late 1991, tensions began building between the former Midnight Rockers partners. This came to a head on Brutus Beefcake's "Barbershop" segment, where Michaels suddenly turned on Jannetty, superkicking him and sending him through the glass window. This set up a potential feud between the two, but Jannetty was soon released from the WWF due to legal issues. Jannetty was rehired 9 months later and immediately targeted Michaels, who had gone on to become Intercontinental Champion. Their match at the 1993 Royal Rumble saw Michaels emerge victorious over his former tag team partner. Jannetty left the WWF for a few months but was then rehired and the feud reignited, with Jannetty challenging Michaels for the Intercontinental title on the May 17, 1993 edition of Raw. This time, Jannetty was able to win the championship, but he held it for only 20 days before losing it back to Michaels at a house show. The two finally ended their long-running feud on the July 19, 1993 episode of Raw, with Michaels winning the match and retaining the Intercontinental championship.
After his lengthy rivalry with Shawn Michaels concluded, Marty Jannetty found a new partner in the up-and-coming 1-2-3 Kid. The duo proved to be an effective team, as they managed to defeat the Quebecers and capture the prestigious WWF Tag Team Championship on the January 10, 1994 edition of Monday Night Raw. However, their title reign was short-lived, as the Quebecers regained the championships from Jannetty and the Kid just one week later at a house show event. Following this, Jannetty wrestled sporadic matches over the next few weeks in February 1994, before ultimately being removed from WWF television programming altogether shortly thereafter.
Jannetty went on to wrestle in several other promotions and returned to the WWF numerous times, however he was never able to ascend to main event status.
