After completing his five-year mission with the Enterprise, Captain James T. Kirk was promoted to Admiral for his outstanding service to the Federation. The Enterprise itself was placed in drydock for elaborate retrofitting. In 2271, however, an unusual threat called V'GER entered Federation territory and headed towards Earth. V'GER was a huge living machine that used the Voyager VI space probe of the twentieth century as a nucleus. The probe had been modified by a civilization of bio-machines in a distant part of the galaxy. Unfortunately V'GER developed anomalies in its design and programming that made it a special danger to Earth. Admiral Kirk and his crew intercepted the probe and were able to defuse the situation successfully.
