Description:
William F. Cody "Buffalo Bill"
Born February 26, 1846
Died January 19, 1917
"Buffalo Bill" Cody was born in LeClair, Iowa and at an early age he and his family moved to Kansas. He rode for the Pony Express and also served in the Civil War. He was given his nickname because he supplied buffalo meat for the workers on the Kansas Pacific Railroad during 1867 and 1868. Cody was the chief scout for the 5th Calvary and he was involved in a number of Indian fights between 1868 and 1872.
In 1869 he became the subject of a dime novel and his career was changed forever. He appeared in theatrical and melodramas which toured for 11 years. In 1883 he organized a Wild West show which included Indian fights, buffalo hunts, roundups, and stage robberies. This Wild West show toured Europe and the United States until 1913. Buffalo Bill helped shape the romantic image of the American frontier.
