More reason never to pay retail price for figures

Posted in Action Figure Chatter

Got a Harley Quinn from the Arkham Knight line, new, but at a good discount. It's an okay figure, suffering from the same stretched out lanky body syndrome found on other female DC Collectibles figures. And of course there are the quality issues.

There's a fingerprint melted into the paint and a flat deformed spot on the forearm. Terrible.

That's not what bothers me most though, the bigger issue is if you get defective figures then you're screwed. DC won't take responsibility for their junky figures unless you got them directly from their online store. You'll have to return them to the store you bought them from otherwise, assuming they take returns.

Seems sh*tty to me, but I don't see anything changing since collectors are still willing to spend $30 on these awful things.

I can't imagine how vitriolic my reviews would be nowadays if I still wrote them. There would be f-bombs and calls for castration all over the place haha.

I've gotten many figure recently (TMNT, Star Wars, DC) for far cheaper than the retail price, I typically wait a year or two to actually purchase a figure

Same here, though like Anti said, even second hand prices are rising.

Question; Is it JUST me, or does it seem like the prices people are asking for figures on the used market, in general, have gone up substantially as of late? Perusing Ebay the last couple of months it seems even old, crappy figures people could barely give away less than a year ago are now at least double what they were before. Am I overlooking a seasonal spike I wasn't aware of? Could it be a result of the Toys R Us closure? Or have people just lost their freakin' minds? Granted, I'm mostly looking at Marvel Legends, but seems it's not as easy to find deals and bargains, especially when it comes to female figures.

I definitely see people trying to sell Havoks and Longshots for $15, even though they used to regularly sell for $7, and a lot of the Marvel figures were constantly on clearance for $5 - $10, BAF piece included.

The bootleg 6 inch Clone Troopers used to be like $8, now all the Chinese sellers don't go lower than $15. I can't justify that much for a figure I'm going to repaint, especially when people don't even want to give me retail price for a custom one.

Interestingly, the Bootleg NECA Ninja Turtles are still only $10 a pop.

I don't know that TRU closing would affect second hand sellers, TRU prices were super marked up and I won't miss them.

It’s not “just you”. I’ve just been doing some research and I was disgusted to see that in the early 2000’s when Toybiz started “Legends”...they were $7.99. Aside from the Hasbro versions being TRIPLE the price we also have garbage like the new Dark Horse Studios 1/12 scale Hellboy. He’s a plastic figure with a cloth coat. Just like Toybiz’s Gambit, Thing, Punisher, Blade, etc...only Helyboy is $109.00. Yes you read that right. A 6” scale plastic figure with a cloth coat...is $109.00.

I know I know. He 1/12 “scaaaaale”...which means he stands 7.5” tall...but Blade came with his freakin MOTORCYCLE! For $7.99!!!

Figures have become so damned inflated that less and less of us are willing to pop ‘em apart and experiment for a custom that might never come to fruition.

$109.00. A hundred...and nine...dollars.

I've been going through a similar mindset regarding in-store toys whose BAFs have been stolen/replaced with inferior parts. I recently saw three separate toys that had the BAFs replaced with broken parts of a Spiderman 3 black spiderman. I alerted the store about the issue, and next time I visited the store, they were back on the shelf at full price.
