HTML and other formatting questions

Figure Realm Comments and QuestionsSorry if this is a dumb question--I feel like I'm just sort of fumbling around (here specifically and in customizing generally) trying to figure stuff out, but I haven't seen anything about this in the FAQ or in any of the site areas where it might be relevant. So--I see that HTML and links aren't allowed in the Custom Showcase, primarily to prevent people from using it as advertising for stuff they're selling. What about elsewhere? Links don't seem to be allowed in profiles or in Got Plot, probably for the same reason (although it's fine to connect an eBay account to profiles, so it seems like other links would be okay too), and there don't seem to be any options for HTML or other kinds of formatting, although I'm not sure about that. Profiles at least seem to show line breaks, although Got Plot didn't seem to when I submitted a caption that was a dialogue between two characters. Since at least Got Plot submissions have to be approved every time they're updated, I'm hesitant to experiment much.

HTML is definitely not allowed anywhere on the website. No website should allow users to input HTML because that is a big security risk.
Links are allowed in a few areas of the website, but not most.
There is some basic formatting that is done, which is mainly the line breaks, smileys and automatically turning links and images into such when they are allowed. Depending where you are on the website the formatting may be slightly different. For example with line breaks, they are allowed when you are viewing a Custom's description, but they will be suppressed when the description is shown in a search result. Smileys will be shown on a Custom page, but removed on search results.
The Got Plot intros and summaries should have been showing the line breaks on the Got Plot page. That was a bug and fixed.
Of course, things always change to as we find better ways to do things, or we have to tighten down rules because of users abusing features, performance problems or security issues. Things are always being tweaked
