Super-Articulated Action Figure Blanks (Kickstarter)

Posted in Action Figure Chatter

It's been a while since I've run my mouth, so here we go lol

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/14 ... nav_search

This is what I've been wanting, blank figures that are ready to be modified without needing to grind off molded belts or boots or whatever.

However, that desire came with the assumption that they would be MUCH cheaper than the stuff we see on the pegs today. I assumed that if the figures didn't need to be painted or packaged, and there was no need to pay to use the likeness of any character or logo, that the figures would be much cheaper. But here is this Kickstarter campaign that crushes my hopes.

Not only do these figures cost the same as the ludicrously (and ever-increasingly) priced Marvel Legends or DC Icons, but they also offer no significant advantage to customizers, which is the one and only reason I would consider funding a project like this.

What improvements, if any, were made to these figures that make them a better choice for customizing than Marvel Legends? I don't know because there's no elaboration about this stuff on the page.

What about shaving off an extra millimeter of material from the hard disks in the hinge joints to dramatically reduce, and maybe even completely eliminate paintrub there? You would use less material and create a huge benefit for customizers.

Consider that we can already get "blank" super-articulated bodies, in a wide variety of body types, and they only cost like $5-$10. All those bland Batroc and Sentry and Wasp and Spiderman UK figures are perpetually on clearance, why would I ever want to pay 4 times as much for the same damn thing?

Furthermore, U.S. shipping is $10 flat, even if you order one figure. So basically you're giving them $7 extra for free. Even if they ship like 3 figures, even after buying the shipping supplies, shipping should still only be like $4.00 First Class.

What. The. Hell.

The figures come on blister cards, even though you're just gonna tear them open to customize. Assuming the blister cards are contributing to the high shipping costs, why not make blister cards an optional thing for collectors, and everyone else can just get a baggie with a cardboard logo thing stapled to it or whatever?

And by the way, the $30k goal only funds the skeletons, the project needs to hit $55k to make the male body available, and $91k for the female body.

I'm happy to see people attempting to make a line of figures like this happen, but holy crap, you have to give us an incentive to buy them other than "hey, here's some more overpriced human-figure-shaped crap to buy."

Yes, I understand making small production runs is expensive. Yes, I'm sure there are many other expenses to consider, like forking over half your earnings to Kickstarter and the Government. I'm afraid there's simply no way to make affordable articulated figures nowadays.

I will reiterate, because I have only good will for the folks who are running this project: I like the idea of what you're doing, but I don't see the point in doing it when there are no advantages over the vastly cheaper, equally serviceable, and readily available figures out right now.

Thoughts? Suggestions for improving the figures? Hatemail?

Here's a link to a topic showing how figures can be modified to make them more customizer friendly right out of the package:

What do you think would make the perfect blank figure?

...but you're so right, the searching eye for good base parts and the way to get them into the project is an great experience and I don't wan't to miss it.but a good, awesome base would be a great thing too for me.however, think it's a question of what someone prefers.I think just swap parts and paint it could work exactly like sculpting on parts.a good eye, good hands or even both ok,I'm not long into customizing right now and don't even got so much of that experience that you guys got^^ but I love this Kind of creativity so much too.great site and friendly people, love to be here

these figures look cool, but yeah, may theyre also not as customizefriendly,as they seem to be.I think the 'ready'to customize should mean, that I don't have to do much pre-work on it like
disassembling and grinding the joints to prevent paintrub.
think a good 'ready' base have to be cheap, universal(not too muscular or monster tits, maybe basic male, female, kid, oversize and skelleton),superarticulated (or even with extra parts for missing articulation like opened hands) and ready for sculpting and painting.but I can say that I also like to search for a base figure at a comic store and to disassemble them^^

Yeah, that's exactly the issue here. If someone is going to make figures specifically for customizing, then I think it's reasonable to expect the figures to be designed in a way that makes that process easier.

And for everyone who likes the process of boil-n-popping and grinding joints, the current figures out there already are great for that experience.

oh yes,I agree with your thought about the prepared surface for sculpting and painting.that's a really important point for being "ready to customize" too! but what's the consequence? write some of these thoughts to companies or maybe start something by ourselves? I think it's a little bit crazy, that companies want to reach people like us but don't even really ask for our needs...if someone had asked or have been experienced in this,we didn't had to discuss what a good 'blank figure' should be^^ so,still open market

I agree with Nightmare, there's not much incentive to buy these blanks when store bought figures are much cheaper. Things like the blister packaging is completely unecessary and adds extra cost. These figs need to be a better AND cheaper alternative to store bought figures. High price is the reason I haven't spent $33 for Superior Spiderman legs on shapeways.

Way I look at it is feel free to buy all those other great skeleton figures that are scale with legends or other "6inch" figures that are out there at a reasonable cost like $25. Not really sure there are other options for this(revoltech skeletons are too small and too expensive) so I am kinda looking forward to getting that army of undead. Though DrNightmare is not incorrect in his assessment either.

Yep, it's an alternative for people who want an in-scale skeleton army.

Although, why a figure that uses 40% less plastic than a normal "fleshy" one costs the same is beyond my understanding lol

An update

This project was successfully funded, congrats to those folks.

However, I'm not sure if I'm more disappointed in the figure collectors who are so eager to pay through the nose for more of this same stuff, or customizers who don't speak up and ask what makes these things worth buying over what's already out there for our needs. As far as I can tell, the answer is nothing.

Maybe I expect too much out of people, maybe none of you care. Either way, as I said, disappointing. *shrug*

Absolutely right, 5-10 dollars for figures is the answer for those folks at Cryptid Toys, or have some actual characters worthwhile to go with the blanks that we would be willing to spend on. I am curious to see what they have in store for the 6" scale after the Female bodies get unlocked... Aliens?

I'd be interested in a parts pack with many different alien heads/hands/feet, and lots of human heads too.

Fullbody aliens would be sweet, I love scifi and creature stuff.
